An esoteric dictum of great antiquity, "As within, so without" is the foundation for many schools of magic and mysticism. Although attributed to many ancient teachers, scholars generally agree that origin of the statement is lost in the prehistoric past. The significance of these words can be spiritual, magical, or purely philosophical. In magical practice, there is an exchange between the magical microcosm of the human soul and the magical macrocosm of the universe and this is the basis of spellcraft.
