According to legend, when the god Atur rode Shandhur in battle against the king of the dragons, the left tusk of Shandhur was slashed off and fell to the earth. In another account, the tusk impaled the lord of dragons and broke off when Shandhur tried to pull it out. The god Atur later had a prosthetic tusk made of magical gold with the strength of hardened steel replace the lost tusk. Meanwhile, the tusk had fallen to the earth and was found by Thaulyokha, the son of Aturyanda, and was received as a sign of divine approval of his rule and his subsequent lineage. Rulers of Kalama closely guarded this relic. The tusk was reportedly lost or taken back by the gods during the Chaos Period (6,992 AS to 6,100 AS), but rulers of Kalama continued to keep a great, gilded tusk as a potent sign of the authenticity of their rule.

Both the legendary tusk and the contrived tusk were thought to have magical powers and endowed the king with powers, but more particularly the original authentic tusk. Without the royal tusk, no would-be King of Kalama was considered authentic.
