Great deciduous trees, Tosplints are found only in the Shadew River Valley where the moderating effect of the river and their unique nature enable them to grow in an otherwise too cold climate. Tosplints favor the wetlands around the river and grow to a height of 150 feet (45m). The oldest known Tosplints are several centuries old and their maximum age is not known. The oldest groves are protected by custom and shamans.

Today Tosplint trees are cultivated around the Shadew River. Gontha herders use these orchards to feed their stock during the winter. The orchards are owned and cared for by collectives to which the various gontha ranchers belong.

The leafy foliage of the tosplint is the principle source of food and nourishment for gontha during the coldest months of the year.
