A lightbox is a magical device used to capture exact images. The device uses glass lenses and a magically-created paper cards that is sensitive to light for a very brief moment. The card then must be processed by a magic-practitioner skilled in the preparation of such cards to increase its size. A lightbox is a costly magical device which does not require attunement to use properly. The lightbox in its most primitive format has been in existence since the first millennium after Salmakhamer. Modern lightboxes with reliable calibration and lenses came into their own in the late twenty fifth century (ca 2480). They were not widely used until about the mid twenty eighth century (ca 2650) which was the time of the height of their popularity.

The titancraft panocular which was invented in 2672 has overtaken the lightbox in widespread use. Today lightboxes are used almost exclusively by magic-practitioners and enthusiasts. The panocular while costly is not as expensive as a lightbox and is less costly to produce developed pictures from the cards.
