A skysail is a sail made from special material specifically for the use of skycraft. Skysails are essential for gliding and also lift. In ancient times, early skycraft makers relied on yearling gontha wool as the only source of material for skysails. During the early Yophenthean Empire, the Merfolk began to produce fleeglesilk in great quantities and sold it to the sky tribes. Fleeglesilk was lighter, stronger, and able to make use of ambient magical energy to produce much stronger lift. The finest fleeglesilk sails were gauze-thin and strong enough to resist shear forces of turbulence.
A sail made from special materials for use in a windship is called a windsail.
Types of Skysails
- driftsail: a sail that pulls the craft, a sail for thrust
- loftsail: a sail used primarily or exclusively for lift
- sprawlsail: a sail that is attached to a flankmast
- ventsail: a permanently enchanted sail with its own magical wind. It can otherwise be a driftsail, loftsail, etc.
- whelmsail: another kind of ventsail
