"By decree of Grand Duke Stalcast Bijäl, all humans of our Dominion who have been subject to the dominion of the lord shall be from this time forth and forever free and empowered with all the liberties and consequences of a freeborn person. Their children and future children shall enjoy the same liberties, duties, and rights." -- so began the decree of His Grand Ducal Highness, Stalcast Bijäl, that liberated the serfs of the whole Grand Duchy.

In fact, there were no serfs in the two Aurician Zamirs, only a little more than half of the human population of Lucacia were serfs at the time of liberation, while many more were serfs in Near Erserce. After the fall of the Yophenthean Empire, the Kalikán empire maintained the practice of serfdom, but the Middle Ages of Chaos had given many the opportunity to escape captivity and fare on their own. Nevertheless, the liberation was enormously popular and according to political observers, absolutely essential to stave off rebellion and revolution in the heartland of the Aurician Empire.

Most former serfs were too poor to leave the employ of their lords, but even the threat of leaving forced manors to treat their previously land-tied labor better. The liberation improved relations with Johaulia and weakened the arguments of opponents to the empire.
