Elmundel Canal
The Elmundel Canal is the first southern link in the modern Ruby Highway that cuts across middle Barathorn. The Elmundel Canal rests entirely within the Free City of Elmundel. A consortium of human and dwarven corpora mercia constructed the canal and its system of locks over the period of time from 2645 to 2667. The Elmundel Canal is the single greatest source of income for Elmundel. Support industries including taverns, lodging, shippers, and manufactures are also very vital to the economy. As part of the Ruby Highway, the canal is on the forefront of economic growth and development of the interior of Barathorn.
Sea ships and sea barges en route to and from Ruby Gates depend upon the canal to enter the waterborne interior of the continent of Barathorn. Canal engineers call the north end of the canal that enters Lake Blackwaves the 'lakeside' end and the south end that opens to the sea the 'seaside' end. The canal cuts across the twenty ddwmir from the Harbor of Elmundel to the south end of Lake Blackwaves. Before the canal, only portages were possible through the interior on the historic Ruby Highway. Watercraft using the canal pay a fee based upon the tonnage of the vessel. The water level of Lake Blackwaves is usually 29.3 gnödva (37.5 m or 123 feet) above sea level. The locks raise vessels to the elevation of 13.7 gnödva (17.536 m or 57.53 feet) above sea level.
