The First Sack of Yophénthë in 840 is generally regarded as the historic end of the High Empire of Yophenthean. The empire and capital city were especially vulnerable due in part to the War of the Courtiers. During this time, the Empire was under the system of the unified monarchy. The function of the king and the high priest of Arathrax were held in the same person of the ruling monarch who was invariably called 'Erreach'. Additionally, all military power was exercised by the legate patron. In 833, the legate patron died without a clear successor. Consequently, the War of the Courtiers as generals and princes of various lesser aristocratic houses arose claiming the office of the legateship. The empire was seen as weak and Gavalúkh the Skylord saw an opportunity.
