Wizard refers to a person who is practiced and capable in arcane spellcasting. By definition a wizard is not a Zavian, although she may once have been. A wizard is capable of panseeing and has the capacity of Vispanifica. In modern society, a wizard has typically undergone formal training in an institution that provides magical instruction. Some wizards were trained as apprentices and this was the standard practice in former years, particularly before the Middle Ages. A wizard is sometimes called a mage although the two terms are not precisely equivalent as a mage is a wizard who belongs to an arcane fraternity or order. The term wizard is sometimes synonymous with the broader term, Magic-Practitioner. Asdaran history is rife with famous and infamous wizards, some of whom affected the outcome of battles and the change of dynasties.

In modern times, wizards or more correctly, magical spellcasting, has become subject to laws intended to protect society from harm, especially chaos cults. Wizards in some jurisdictions, such as southern Pytharnia, including the Empire of Magdala and the Empire of Medibgö, are required to wear the ffwrsva to indicate their status and capacity as a wizard.
