Biyoni is a Gorcorumbese courtesan who lives with and accompanies a Gorcorumbese man. She is paid a regular salary and regular gifts according to contract. The contract may also state who gets custody of children. Gorcorumbese law has rules governing the rights and obligations of biyonis and their treatment. They have a lower status then Gorcorumbese noblewomen, but are thought privately envied for their perceived freedoms.
The origin of the word biyoni is uncertain. Some philologers believe it comes from a word that means the woman who lights the candle. This is thought to be due to the practice of the biyoni lighting the candle after an evening's pleasures to ask for her payment.
