A cosmic force or principle and an ethical precept, Chaos is regarded almost universally as the diametric opposite to the principle of Law. Chaos can mean variously disorder, imagination, freedom from rigidity, or a primal force of creation. It is praised as the disruption of a stagnant, stifling order and cursed as an uncaring randomness. Throughout the Pallathantic, the word for 'chaos' typically signifies "unshaped matter."

Throughout history, the principles of Chaos have appealed to nomads, the restless, souls seeking escape, liberators from tyranny, artists, and the wanderer. The anti-establishment bent of Chaos is only part. The principle of chaos embraces the original matter of creation, unlimited by preconceived order. Philosophers believe Chaos cannot be truly described with words as words are tools of order and repetition. Chaos can only be experienced.

Cosmologers believe that chaos energy emanates from the Realm of Chaos and penetrates the entire cosmos. Throe Races are thought to inhabit the Realm of Chaos. Cosmologers maintain that during the Middle Ages of Chaos, the energies of the Realm of Chaos intensified, influencing the consciousness of humanlikes, especially humans, coming to a crescendo with the Anarch Wars.

Since the Isbajutha, chaos has been viewed, particularly by the common folk, with fear and disapproval. Most jurisdictions outlaw and punish cults of chaos and using chaos to practice magic. Philosophers however have contended that both organized matter and chaos are essential to the existence of our universe.
