Classical Elements

The ancients divided the components or ‘elements’ of nature into a handful of kinds. The earth, the water, the air, and the fire comprise the four classical elements. Some systems add a fifth element called ether or the quintessence.
You may note that the four classical elements can be said to correpond to the four states of matter in our modern world: earth (solid), water (liquid), air (gas), fire (plasma).
The classification of the gods into divinities of earth, sea, sky, and sun also answers to the four classical elements.
