Earth-Sun Conjunction
The Earth-Sun Conjunction is a religious symbol among the dwarves, and among some humans and humanlikes. The symbol is a circle with four rays, one pointing upwards and one downwards, and one pointing on right and left sides. The ends of the rays only slighly penetrate the circle. The rays pointing upwards and downwards are about twice as long as the rays on either side. There are some basic similarities with an Arathracian Solifix in both appearance and meaning.
Meaning
The Earth-Sun Conjunction represents the relationship of heaven and earth. The circle represents the circle of the sun (heaven) superimposed over the earth which is also a circle. In very ancient times, the circular horizon of the earth meant the mortal world was a disk, in the likeness of the sky and the sun which were also seen as disks. The horizontal rays represent the flat horizon or the world of mortality. The vertical rays represent the connection between what is above with that which is below. The four rays also represent the succession of equinoxes and solstices through the circle of the year or the circular course of the sun through the year. Additionally, the four rays represent for the four cardinal directions, north, south, east, and west. Religious observers say that the simplicity of the shape is at the core of its seemingly endless symbolism. The symbol is also used in magical notation.
In colored renditions, the circle and rays are depicted in gold, representing the power of the sun or holy power of heaven. The interior of the circle is red which means the red blood of mortality associated with the earth. The field is blue, representing the infinite field of heaven. The red and the blue represent the realm of heaven and the realm of earth coming together.
Ancient Usage
The symbol is very ancient and can be found on petroglyphs of great antiquity among humans and humanlikes. The symbol is thought to have been common to nearly all cultures at one point in the past. Dwarves hold it to be sacred and very important. It is the symbol displayed on the flag of the Commonwealth of the Ithrads, on the flag of the Kingdom of Dagdoria, and on the flag of the Kingdom of Themet. The symbol was used anciently to mark a sacred place or to commemorate an offering or communication with the powers of heaven.
