The term lock as used in arcane practice is a magical precept that functions in conjunction with the clave. The lock is associated with feminine magical calibration. The student of arcana usually first encounters the lock as presented in a Book of Locks and Claves or an instructor using such a text. The conjunction of a lock and an appropriate clave is said to activate or trigger a magical effect (or 'spell').
