Panstream
The panstream describes the ambient magical energy that penetrates the world of Asdar and its pertinent phenomenology. The panstream is essential for life and for the magical powers of traditional wizards and spellcasters. Modern titancraft also makes use of the panstream through a process and device called panagogia. One proficient in the observation of the panstream is a panseer and panseeing is fundamental to arcane spellcasting. The panstream flows through phenomena of nature, through the seas, the skies, the earth, the forests, the herds of beasts, the souls of humans and humanlikes.
Most magic use and virtually all titancraft engines only access the shallowest level which is closest to the human experience. Consequently, this shallow layer can be drained relative to the deeper layers. It is believed that it can never be fully drained as the deeper levels will continually replenish it. A panseer can see the layers of the panstream which are closest to the perceptible range of conventional experience. The deeper the layers, the more difficult it is for the panseer to note them. For this reason, some creatures and environmental phenomena can appear to have a mediocre panwarp but in effect possess a stronger panwarp which lies deeper in the panstream and is less visible to a panseer.
The panstream is polycosmic and exists both locally and in other realms. Theoretical panurgists believe the panstream is omnicosmic, that is, present in every realm in the cosmos.
The energy of the panstream for a given area, creature, or phenomenon is measured in octaves.
Panwarp
A given creature or item can affect the flow of the panstream in its immediate surroundings. This effect is known as the panwarp. Typically the strength of the influence determines how large the panwarp is, with small, relatively non-magical creatures like a bee having a very slight panwarp and larger, magical beasts such as a gibgibsew having a rather large panwarp. Legendary creatures such as the dragon have incredibly strong panwarps that typically max out the sensitivity of devices designed to detect them.
Research
Several of the world's leading academic institutions, such as the Archguild School of Magitechnics at Trevirs, Shakunagamshiru Archcollege, the Archcollege of Bryndyd, the Archcollege of Mirrhaimo, the Archguild School of Mäddglows, the High College of Arcane Science, and the Magitechnic Institute of Aurice (Tellurian College of Magdeology), have research centers dedicated to the study of the panstream. Some of these sponsor explorations to remote and dangerous sites, such as the Throe Wastes of Lucacia.
