Uryala
On the world of Asdar, the term 'gnome' is the common word for the race of Uryala [anglicized pronunciation: /ɝˈjɑlə/]. The Uryala live throughout the world in sylvan caves and underwater lairs. They have pale, mottled skin, large, pointed, floppy ears, small noses, and large, somewhat almond-shaped eyes. They have a crop of hair on their heads of white, black, or grey. Their irises are shades of lavender, purple, green, grey, or rarely blue, with a host of mixtures of these same colors. Uryala stand nearly a meter high (3' 2").
In Pytharnian, the Uryala are called 'Esbrani' or 'Esbrain.' Their aquatic cousins are called the 'Gruain' in Pytharnian.
The Uryala are a practical race and love their forest homes. These gnomes feel equally comfortable in caves, but avoid great depths of the earth. They are on friendly terms with the dwarves. The Uryala of Pytharnia are most populous around Lake Lisgoria. They have a strong understanding of the plants and beasts of this region and can call upon their aid when necessary to protect themselves. Uryala have domesticated the hemnasig, a furry animal that combines the appearance of a forest sloth with a long, rhinoceros-like horn at its nose. Uryala use these beasts for burdens and as pet companions.
