Aireánnau is the mother and according to Arathracian belief, the god Arathrax is the father of eight demi-mortal sons who were said to be the progenitors of the Yophenthean priest-nobles. They are sometimes called the 'Great Sons of Arathrax' to distinguish them from the expression 'Sons of Arathrax' which has reference to any male progeny descended from the original eight sons.

It is important to distinguish the names of the months of the Arathracian Calendar which are named after the eight sons of Arathrax and their wives from the months in which the eight sons were born. Erithráigean and Saint Erismádhal were said to have been born in their namesake months, but the other six sons were not. In other words, the third son, Eriphírvean, was born in the tenth month of the Arathracian Calendar, but the third month of the Arathracian Year, Gandia, is named after him. According to a later legend the various sons died each in his namesake's month, but this legend is considered spurious by the modern Arathracian Church.
