The Common Year is the format for measuring the year now widely in use throughout the Pallathantic and is most easily noted by having fifteen calendar months. It contrasts with the Arathracian Year, used by the Arathracian Temple and clergy, which has sixteen months. The Common Year is ascribed to the teachings of Salmakhamer, although Arathracians believe Salmakhamer actually taught a sixteen month year and that the common year is a corruption developed during the Middle Ages of Chaos. Since the Yophentheans used the Arathracian Calendar for all official dates in their empire within the first millennium after the Coming of Salmakhamer, it is not easy to ascertain the truthfulness of this belief. The Common Year (or Calendar) regained currency due to the dominion of sky tribes after the fall of the Yophenthean Empire. The sky tribes insisted that they never used the Arathracian Calendar.

The first day of the Common Year is on Summer Solstice. There are fifteen months, in principal, for the lunar cycle of sunmoon. Today, astronomers measure the length of the year as 384.11 days. Each month usually has 25, 26, or 27 days in length. Every ninth year, an extra day is added to the last month of the year and every two hundred years an extra day is added to the second month of the year.
