Text Excerpt

I, PARADEISIUS, son of Captain Iugain of the sometime Ebinóëse Army, wrote this guide in the one hundred and nineteenth year of the dominion of the glorious NOBLE REPUBLIC of AURICE, during the general-lordship of his most pre-eminent citizenship, LORD JARDO GALDIMESE of historic reputation, knowing the records and accounts of men to be of enormous benefit to the advancement of human civilization and to the unceasing labors of the Auricese who seek to enlarge the majesty of their mighty city.

The unforeseen outcome of my remarkable voyage throughout the chiefest and most ancient regions of the world began in the one hundred and second year of our majestic city during my service as an air navigator to a prominent Corpus Merx of Aurice. The prince-administrator, searching for new means of commercial enrichment, saw fit to equip and commission an expeditionary force of five skyships, newly fitted with magitech wind-drivers and a copious outlay. Our mission was to delve into the hinterlands of the Brasen Horde, strictly avoiding any diplomatic or military quagmires, in search of potential industries and trade. The prince-administrator, an audacious entrepreneur, sought to find news sources of wealth that might be more readily obtained than the distant and prosperous colonies of Skaligdae whose commercial ventures and riches already are jealously held by a closed circle of Auricese families. Accordingly, late spring was chosen and the prince-administrator eagerly oversaw the preparations for the expedition.

I was deemed qualified for lieutenant navigator of the flagship of the expedition, the majestic, Samsomeer and our captain, Thrant Barcfaithe, convened the men and supplies of so great an expedition towards evening at a town on the Aurician main, for it was the wish of the prince-administrator not to bring any undue publicity or common knowledge to our voyage into the heart of the great Asdaurian Continent. The Samsomeer, as well as the Guthcurris, the Fantastic, the Fearless, and the Prosperity departed, burdened with a total contingent of over three hundred men.
