This list names codices that are known to exist or reputed to have existed. There are many more ancient codices in existence, some have numerous copies. Since the codex format gradually came into use over the period of the seventh through the eighth centuries after Salmakhamer, many codices are in a reasonable state of preservation. Their value to scholars and literary historians is enormous.
