The ruins of Vilangril lie in the eastern Great Mage Dearth in Alascundy.

Vilangril is an abandoned city of the Great Mage Dearth, a witchland of Alascundy. The city was a flourishing urban center up through the Middle Ages until the Anarch Wars when it succumbed to the powerful magics that created the Great Mage Dearth. It is now abandoned by any sensible creature and has become the haunt of the unnatural beasts that wander the throe wastes. Vilangril[1] is a magnet for treasure hunters and adventurers and most often the cause of their demise.

Although there are three other cities in the Great Mage Dearth, Vilangril is most famous as a former haven for wizards and their apprentices. Tamunar of Vilangril, the tutor of Ugorth the Archmage, was a famous son of the now abandoned city.

In 2519, the Codex Noctium of Vilangril was discovered in the haunted city. Some speculation has arisen that the adventurer's eventual death was caused by a magical disease he acquired due to his exposure to the conditions of the throe waste. Panurgists suspect that due to dissipation of the throe waste, Vilangril could be clear of its venomous magic in as little as a hundred years to as much as nearly a thousand.

Local authorities have erected a small shrine on the eastern border of the Great Mage Dearth where it is closest to Vilangril. The shrine memorializes all the persons who were slain in the Anarch Wars and all the foolish adventurers who have died attempting to retrieve treasure from Vilangril. Red pennants are flown from the shrine, representing each lost soul. The caretaker reminds visitors he gets a box of new pennants from Leva, the provincial capital of Alascundy every month and some months he runs out of pennants and has to wait for the next month.
