Free City of Elmundel
The Free City of Elmundel is an micro-state or city-state in southwestern Barathorn. Elmundel lies in the north end of the Bay of Elmundel. Elmundel was part of the Dewyddairsh province of the Skymark. The city became autonomous in 2523 AI and independent in the twenty seventh century after the Gneikladasic War (2609 to 2617). Elmundel is a great entrepôt of merchants. The city famously controls the Elmundel Canal which links the Pytharnian Sea with the southern end of Lake Blackwaves. The territory of the city includes all the land between the sea and the lake. It neighbors the Skymark Commonwealth to the west and the Kingdom of Firche to the east. The population of the whole Free City is estimated at 230,000.
The country of Elmundel is the first seaside site in the portage known as the Ruby Highway which leads to Ruby Gates and farther to Obipine. The Elmundel Canal practically defines the industry and economy of the city-state. Lock fees and related lodging income has ensured Elmundel's economic independence for the present. The largest corpus merx based in the free city is Dragon Frontiers.
Elmundel Canal
Constructed 2645 to 2667, the Elmundel Canal is the single greatest source of income for the Free City. Support industries including taverns, lodging, shippers, and manufactures are also very vital to the economy.
Government
The chief executive and head of state of Elmundel is Owyffraig Tolchawr, the High Governor. The High Governor is elected by the High Thing and serves at their pleasure. The High Thing is comprised of the guildmasters and land-owners of the free city and convenes in High Elmundel and each member is called an alder regardless of his qualification.
Elmundel offers residents and visitors a lax policy with regard to printed books and materials similar to the Republic of Gonsk. While Elmundel has laws requiring the registration of printed books to prevent the dissemination of subversive chaos materials, they are rarely enforced and the city-state is well-known for providing printed materials for the world.
