Nearly all of the Throvian province of Alascundy is part of the Great Mage Dearth which is a throe waste, a magically altered environment that is dangerous to most life. The Great Mage Dearth was created as a result of several conflicts during the Anarch Wars, 2166 to 2224. The remains of several significant cities are known to lie in the Great Mage Dearth: Vilangril, Hars, Aszhrafa, Heszh, Luspern, and Eszhuna. The provincial government of Alascundy has made entry into the Great Mage Dearth illegal and persons attempting to enter or exiting the region are arrested and taken into custody, usually to be searched for any artifacts, to be given medical treatment, and to be delivered to the local magistrate.
The great vastness of the Great Mage Dearth is seen as evidence that its creation resulted from numerous battles and not a single event. At its greatest length, the waste is about 197km (120 miles) long.
The Great Mage Dearth is a wasteland of conventional life, but home to strange creatures, such as bacchabunds, cryptilians, and other throes.
The periphery of the Great Mage Dearth is famous for the Battle of Kadraskan.
