The Strait of Ummak has a dry climate and is prone to desert winds from the east which drive dust and small sand particles during wind storms over the strait. These wind-born particles can darken sails and weigh them down, especially if the sandstorm follows a rainstorm. The waters of the strait become brownish red when dust and sand from desert storms on either side fall into it. | The Strait of Ummak has a dry climate and is prone to desert winds from the east which drive dust and small sand particles during wind storms over the strait. The Strait of Ummak is a long, narrow waterway reaching between the Sea of Malankhas and the Memnosian Sea. Magdeologers believe it was formed by earth movements and demarcates the boundary between the continent of Danona and the continent of Asdauria. During the Age of Ice and Fire, it is thought the bottom of the Strait of Ummak was above sea level.
In historic times, it has been subject to Jykki pirates, but during stable periods, such as the Yophenthean Empire, was an important access route for sea merchants from the Pallathantic Region to voyage to Omre and Zephasia. Today, the Strait of Ummak is patrolled by armed merchant ships of Shaliz-Um-Warif and by Narsadese merchant ships. It is also an international air shipping corridor. Treaties between Jhaadi Zhumzhur and human nations have outlawed piracy in its waters.
