Barathorn
Barathorn is a continent of rugged, snow-capped mountains and home to ancient lake dragons and the Bukalaan Dwarven civilization. The mountains and wilds of Barathorn are cut from a rougher mold than the civilized lands of the Pallathantic Sea. The reclusive dragon scarcely ever seen elsewhere in the known world, is only uncommon in the middle wilds of Barathorn. The murky waters of Dragon Sea are known in folklore as the habit of aquatic dragons. Nordic forests cover much of Barathorn on the slopes of rugged mountains reaching with a thousand fjords to the icy sea. Southern Barathorn is a temperate place, however, and the Kingdom of Glaye rests on gently sloping plains and woods to the Mathareusan Sea in the Glaike Peninsula. The Mipnor Kings led the Parkyons, a skyfaring tribe, from western Jaggudorns across the sea in their ancient skycraft to set up their roots in the mountains of southern Barathorn. The Skymark today is the oldest human nation of this most recent wave of human immigrants to Barathorn. Western Barathorn is formed most roughly into three great peninsulas jutting into the western sea, the Grawlf Peninsula, the Bukalaan Peninsula, and the Dravernian Peninsula. The dwarves of Bukalaa have made the mountains of the the midmost peninsula their home for millennia. Brave Barathorners portage across Barathorn, making a trek of sea and wilderness from the Free City of Elmundel over the great Lake Blackwaves, then over the Dragon Sea, into Mariners Bay, and to the walls of the dwarven city-state of Ruby Gates, so named for its famous traffic in rubies.
Southern Barathorn
The Republic of Gonsk, The Skymark Commonwealth, the Kingdom of Glaye, and Dragonfirth are some of the most political significant human states of southern Barathorn. The Free City of Elmundel is small but extremely successful as it controls the entry of the surface trade route that accesses the interior of Barathorn. The Dravernian Peninsula, sometimes called the Dravernuky Peninsula, comprises most of southwestern Barathorn. Other states are Gnoost, Ackmungo, Tholn, Dravernia, Itszaadi, Charst, Kingdom of Urgundia, Kingdo of Firche, Free City of Elmundel, Engway, Skerrod, Harskavia, Theocracy of Amberstar, Republic of Vree, and the Kingdom of Thrull.
Economy
Barathorn's principle industries are agricultural. Barathorn is famous for its ruby markets and Gonsk's free printing trade. Fishing, trapping, and ore extraction are important in frontier areas.
Ruby Highway
The Ruby Highway is world-famous as the historic portaging route for merchants, thieves, and pirates from Elmundel to Ruby Gates. The highway remains a thoroughfare of commerce and is the means by which the red rubies of Barathorn are introduced to a wider world market. The route is served in modern times by two major lock systems, the Elmundel Canal and the Bamarra Canal, to enable lake barges to have access to the Dragon Sea and to Ruby Gates.
Major Cities
Although the overall population of Barathorn is less than half of Pytharnia, Corundy, Ambrinqua, and Lucacia, the continent boasts several important cities, including Elmundel, Galmaddin, Talise, Enoultseyrand, Stroy, Demonstil, Gneikladas, Genskas, Lugdunia, Thurbund, Mitrune, Bamarra, Imiraldic, Surcadif, and Ruby Gates. Elmundel and Enoultseyrand are the most populous human cities. Despite these major urban centers, most humans in Barathorn live in small settlements and frontier towns are characteristic of the continent. Northern Barathorn is very sparsely populated with humans and even humanlikes are uncommon in some reaches.
